Yell, a leading international directories publisher, has won the Corporate Social Responsibility category at the prestigious Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Excellence Awards 2006, for its flagship schools environmental campaign, the Yellow Woods Challenge. The CIPR Awards, presented on July 3, recognise and reward best practice in public relations throughout the UK. Yell was applauded by the judges for developing a colourful, creative campaign that achieved excellent results and press coverage, plus engagement from local communities and children.
Colin Farrington, director general at the CIPR, said: "The number of entries received this year was unprecedented. The standard of the winners and the finalists demonstrate the good work being done in the industry and the contribution PR makes to business and society.”
Since the launch of the Yellow Woods Challenge in 2002, more than one million schoolchildren have been involved in recycling more than one million old Yellow Pages directories. This simple, educational and fun recycling competition is run by Yellow Pages with the Woodland Trust and local authorities across the UK.
“The Yellow Woods Challenge is a shining example of how organisations can work in partnership in a very positive way,” said Karl Mitchell, director of fundraising at the Woodland Trust. “Not only does the environment benefit but thousands of children are learning about why it's important to recycle and are being made aware of the value of our native woods.”
Susan Irwin, head of PR at Yell, said: “Winning this prestigious accolade is confirmation that the Yellow Woods Challenge is amongst the best CSR campaigns in the UK. It recognises our long-term business commitment to the environment and the benefit the campaign brings to local schools and their communities.”
